South Island TSR Regional Report - February 2019

A new TSR has joined the Farm Source fold in Canterbury. Phil Rains will split his time between the Leeston and Rakaia Farm Source stores, working with farmers in the Ellesmere and Darfield regions.

Phil brings broad industry knowledge and hands-on experience, including 15 years as a farm owner/operator. His strong background in selling and servicing the rural network in Canterbury will mean Phil is already a familiar face to farmers in the area.

His career began in the mid-80s with a two-year stint in the Royal New Zealand Air Force working in logistics. In the early 90s he changed tack and spent the following decade-and-a-half dairy farming, share milking and dry stock farming in Mayfield. Phil’s post-farming career has seen him work in chemical and raw materials trading at Redox, dairy hygiene at Ixom and as a dairy rep at CRT Co-operative (now Farmlands).

For me, the most enjoyable part is relationship building and helping find solutions on farm.

Two months into his new gig as a Farm Source TSR, Phil is busy getting to know his new colleagues and has spent plenty of time out on the road meeting farmers, learning about their businesses and how best he can help them.

"For me, the most enjoyable part is relationship building and helping find solutions on farm," says Phil, who is a qualified artificial insemination (AI) technician and also holds farming qualifications from the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.

As autumn draws closer, Phil’s looking forward to talking with his new customers about the exclusive benefits that come from being part of a Co-op as strong as Fonterra.

"We will be bringing some great deals on autumn pasture, magnesium and dairy hygiene which will help our farmers save money," says Phil.

Phil joins more than 60 Farm Source TSRs across the country dedicated to being trusted advisors for the farmers they work with. Like Phil, many Farm Source TSRs have extensive farming backgrounds and all of them are passionate about helping farmers thrive. As the face and place of Fonterra in the community, the entire Farm Source team takes great pride in supporting an industry which is so important to New Zealand.

In his spare time, Phil enjoys getting outdoors playing softball, fly fishing and mountain biking. He is dad to three daughters, Kasey, Caitlin and Megan, and has been married to Helen for 27 years.
